The RRSP is the only account in Canada that in addition to being tax sheltered for Canadian investment, is also sheltered against US withholding taxes. This means that you are able to invest into US dividend stocks in your RRSP without being obligated to pay any taxes on your returns.

In this video we go over 4 top US dividend stocks that are good investment options for your RRSP and discuss in detail how much they return on your investment. So if you are wondering should I invest in RRSP or what RRSP stocks to buy for a decent return, make sure to watch till the end of the video in order to get all your questions answered. Essentially, this video is a complete guide to the RRSP for beginners.

The first US dividend stocks that we take a look at is AbbVie. This is an American pharmaceutical company, founded in 2013, and in the 9 years of their operation, their stock has mare than quadrupled in value. This growth is incredible for a dividend stock, and even if they only maintain a fraction of this growth rate in the future, this stock would be an amazing investment. In addition to the incredible growth, this stock also pays out a generous dividend rate of 4.15%. The only downside with this stock is that there have been prolonged periods of downswing in the worth of the stock in the past; although the overall trend has maintained massively positive, this is still worth noting as it could indicate possible tribulations in the future of the company. So overall, this is a great investment opportunity, but it is important to invest cautiously with this one.

The second stock we take a look at is UVV, which is the stock for Universal Corporations, one of the leading tobacco companies in the world. UVV does not exhibit much of a growth trend; in fact, it has been extremely turbulent over the years. Instead, this stock pays out an incredibly high dividend rate of 5.46%, which is by far the highest dividend yield out of the stocks we cover today. In addition despite the numerous turbulence in the price of the stock, UVV has still grown about 24% in value over the past 10 years, which indicate that even though the growth rate of this stock isn't amazing by any stretch, it has still been able to maintain its value against the inflation.

The next stock we go over is KO, which is the stock for the Coca Cola company. This stock is both a growth and dividend stock; now granted this stock doesn't offer the highest rates in either category, but since it has a decent enough rate in both, with dividends re-invested, the two returns will compound each other over time and produce a high return rate. KO has grown about 83% over the past 10 years, which is a high number for a dividend stock. As well as this, it provides a 2.74% dividend rate, which again despite not being the highest return for a dividend stock, it is still a decent rate. But by far the best part of investing into KO is the fact that it is one of the safest investments in the US market; as a matter of fact, over the past couple of decades, this stock has only gone down in value over a long period of time when the market as a whole has crashed.

Last but not least, we go over DUK, which is the stock for Duke Energy, an electrical power and natural gas company. Similar to KO, DUK is also both a growth and dividend stock. It has a slightly lower growth rate compared to KO, as it grew about 63% over the past 10 years; but on the other hand, it has a slightly higher dividend rate with 3.79%. This is also a good investment for the long term, as similar to Coca Cola, this stock could experience compound growth between the dividend returns and the growth of the stock in value.

It is important to make sure you never contribute to your RRSP more than your available contribution room. You can check to see how much contribution room you have available to you by logging into your CRA account. Also every year, 18% of your yearly income is added to your available RRSP contribution, so you can check every year to see how much contribution room you have available to you at that point.

When it comes to RRSP withdrawal, you are not able to withdraw funds before the age of 65, except for some particular circumstances such as the RRSP first time home buyer program, where you are allowed to use your RRSP funds for the down payment of your first home.

Once you are 65, your RRSP will turn into RRIF, Registered Retirement Income Fund, and you will be able to use your income from the dividends of your investment in order to have a retirement salary without ever running out of money.
