The brand new Tim Horton's Mastercard is a new contender for the best credit card Canada 2024 title. Although it doesn't seem as flashy as most other best credit cards 2024 Canada, it offers some unique and valuable features. As a result, we need to take a closer look to discover if these features are worth getting the card for or not.

The Tim's Credit Card has no annual fees and is free to own. It offers 15 points per dollar spent at Tim Horton’s, 5 points per dollar spent on gas, groceries, and transit purchases, as well as 1 point per $2 spent on all else. Although neither Neo Financial, Mastercard, nor Tim's Financial declare how much each point is actually worth, the value of the points can be extracted by how many points are required to redeem each product at Tim Horton's, which is the best way to redeem these points.

Given the amount of points needed for redeeming towards each Tim Horotn's product, the maximum value of the Tim Rewards points is approximately 0.67 cents. This means that you can get up to 10% value back on purchases at Tim Hortons, 3.3% value back on gas, groceries, & transit, as well as 0.3% value back on all else.

The 10% back at Timmies is great value, and if you are a regular Tim Hortons customer, then this card is worth having for that reason alone. The 3.3% value back on groceries is slightly higher than the 3% cash back offered by the BMO Cash Back Mastercard, but since the BMO card offers actual cash back, it is probably a better option. The 3.3% value back on gas is higher than all other no fee credit cards in Canada 2024, the closest card being the CIBC Costco Mastercard, which offers 3% back on gas at Costco gas stations only!

The 0.3% value back on all else however is absolutely awful. Almost all credit cards in Canada offer a minimum of somewhere between 0.5%-1% cash back on all purchases, which means that 0.3% is lower than almost all other credit cards in Canada 2024. As a result, even if you do decide to get the Tim's Mastercard, make sure not to use it on any purchases other than Tim Horton's, maybe groceries, gas, and transit. For all other purchases, use literally any other card.
