Castlevania The Next Generation | A Retrospective of the 16-bit SNES, Mega Drive and PC Engine Games
The Castlevania series review continues with the 16-bit Castlevania games on the Super Nintendo, Mega Drive, PC Engine and the Sharp X68000. Namely Super Castlevania, Castlevania The New Generation, Castlevania Rondo of Blood and Castlevania Vampire's Kiss. I will be looking at the history and the context as we explore the next generation of Castlevania games.
00:00 Intro
00:51 Super Castlevania
06:31 Castlevania X68000
09:03 Castlevania Rondo of Blood
14:27 Castlevania The New Generation
20:46 Castlevania Vampire's Kiss
23:39 Outro
The 16-bit era of Super Castlevania games represents a big leap of faith for Konami. Super Castlevania 4, Castlevania The New Generation and Rondo of Blood made a lot of big creative decisions. There's lots of experimentation and loads of opportunities for people new to the industry. As Konami headed into the 32-bit era this took the Castlevania series to dizzying new heights.
Members of the Castlevania 4 team would go on to be instrumental parts of Konami’s output, working on what might now be considered the golden age of Konami. Axelay, Turtles, Probotector and Rocket Knight were all made by Castlevania alumni. This era will always be very special to me and I’m very happy to share my love for these games.
