Spirit of Place

An award-winning documentary about the late Marilee Scaff (1915-2019) and her encounters with wilderness and wildlife. It examines the question of how twenty-first century people can cultivate a spirit of place – one that connects them to Nature and community. It also examines how today's indoor children overcome what Richard Louv calls a "nature-deficit disorder"?

Spirit of Place examines these questions through the eyes of an extraordinary woman: the nation's oldest girl scout, age 103, at the time of her death. Dr. Marilee Scaff loved magnificent forests, flowers, mountains, and tranquil streams, all of which taught her valuable lessons about the meaning of life.

Shot in the American West, Spirit of Place tells a moving story about the importance of wildness on a human-dominated planet. A video essay with a poignant message and inspiring ending, the film is suitable for viewing by all age groups.

Written, filmed, and produced by Monty Hempel. Music composed by Mei Wang and produced by John Manchester. Winner of the John Muir Award, Yosemite International Film Festival (2011).
