Authorities are using multiple drones to follow the escapades of wild Asian elephants migrating through southwest China's Yunnan Province, revealing the full scope of their life on the journey.

Due to the mountainous terrain of Yunnan's Yuxi City, the elephant herd has changed directions many times. To keep up with their unpredictable movements, the Yunnan Forest Fire Fighting Corps' wild Asian elephant search and monitoring team and the Yuxi City Public Security Bureau's unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) monitoring team have divided themselves into multiple groups to track the elephants from several locations.

Drone footage shows the elephants patronizing a cornfield near Shijie Township, where they help themselves to crops in the field. While eating, the elephants constantly flap their massive ears to cool themselves down in the midday heat. Later, one of the elephant calves can also be seen opening up a well to quench its thirst and even spraying a little water.

On Wednesday morning, the elephant herd moved along the ridges and fields along the border of Yimen and Eshan counties. While descending a steep slope, the adult elephants can be seen using their forelegs to flatten the ridge, allowing the baby elephants to pass more easily.

After eating and drinking, drone footage shows the elephants playing in the soil to cool themselves off. As the weather gets warmer, the elephants are trying their best to escape the heat. Rather than going out at night, the herd has been heading out in the late afternoon in search of food with lots of stops along the way for soil fights and mud rolling sessions.

Foraging is tiring work, evidenced by the behavior of one elephant, who needed to be nudged along and woken up from its nap to keep up with the herd.

In addition, Yunnan authorities have issued a province-wide special public liability insurance for wildlife accidents. The local government is currently processing compensation claims for economic and property losses sustained by villagers living along the herd's route.
