China's burgeoning carbon fiber industry has been skyrocketing as the country's new energy projects, like wind turbines and electric vehicles, heat up demand for the resistant but lightweight resource.

In Xi'ning City of northwest China's Qinghai Province, a deputy manager from Zhongfu Shenying Carbon Fiber said even though their production capacity has topped 10,000 tons, it is difficult to catch up with mounting orders.

"Currently, supply can hardly meet demand. Orders are booked out until the end of this year. And now clients come to talk about securing supplies for next year," said Li Wei, deputy general manager of Zhongfu Shenying Carbon Fiber Co., Ltd.

To meet the surging demand, many domestic carbon fiber makers are expanding production.

When that happens, experts say, carbon fiber supply shortages and prices are expected to ease in the coming two or three years.

But demand could remain the same or increase. Besides being used to make sports equipment, carbon fiber is a main resource in the production and manufacturing of wind turbine blades and solar panels. With China planning to reach peak carbon emissions by 2030 and full carbon neutrality by 2060, insiders expect demand for carbon fiber to keep going up.

Data shows the global carbon fiber consumption for wind turbine blades maintained a strong growth of 20 percent in 2020. Analysts predicted that the demand for carbon fiber in the wind power sector will reach 90,000 tons by 2025.
