Raspberry Pi 5 Small Parts Singulator & Pneumatic Sorter System

An inside look at my custom-built Small Parts Singulator and automated sorting system! Driven by a Raspberry Pi 5 acting as the central brain, this industrial-inspired setup utilizes a network of Raspberry Pi Pico 2 (RP2350) "limbs" communicating via full-duplex RS-485 to handle high-speed hardware control.

The system processes bulk parts via a pneumatic tipper and funnel into a 24V vibratory shaker, feeding them onto a custom-built conveyor belt. Instead of blind commands, the system relies on a live "Digital Twin" architecture in Python. It streams real-time telemetry and uses closed-loop feedback to verify that physical actuators have actually fired.

Using a custom high-gain optical break-beam sensor (TSL2591) running on PIO state machines and an integrated camera system for precise calibration, the Pi 5 coordinates 10 individual pneumatic solenoids to precisely blast sorted pieces into their target bins with microsecond accuracy.
