On May 6, 2025, Vishal Sharma, a travel vlogger, was traveling in the third AC coach of the Hemkunt Express (Train No. 14609) from Rishikesh to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra. During the journey, he noticed overcharging by the pantry staff: a bottle of water labeled ‘Wonder Aqua’ was sold to him for ₹20, whereas the approved Rail Neer bottle is priced at ₹15. Additionally, he was charged ₹20 for coffee (instead of the regulated ₹10) and ₹50 for noodles (exceeding the prescribed ₹40). Sharma lodged a complaint through the RailMadad app regarding these discrepancies.

Later that night, while resting on his upper berth, Sharma was confronted by a group of men, allegedly pantry staff, who demanded that he come down. When he refused, stating he had only filed a complaint, one of the men climbed up and physically assaulted him, pulling his leg and causing injuries. Sharma recorded parts of the incident, which showed his torn clothes and visible injuries. He shared these videos on social media platforms, including X (formerly Twitter) and YouTube, bringing widespread attention to the incident .
