El Observatorio Cervantes en Harvard FAS. Encuentros transatlánticos en torno al español: "La percepción del español a los dos lados del Atlántico"

Organizado por los Institutos Cervantes de Harvard y Lyon, este es el primero de una serie de encuentros en torno al español en EEUU y en Europa, que analizan su situación desde distintos ámbitos. En esta ocasión, dos hispanistas de ambos lados del Atlántico comparan la percepción del español, ofreciéndonos un panorama realista, alejado de triunfalismos y victimismos, de la situación y la visión de esta lengua hoy día internacionalmente. Se abordan temas relacionados con cuestiones sociolingüísticas, la relevancia socio-cultural del español y sus variedades en ambos contextos, su presencia en los medios, así como la relación entre percepción y enseñanza.

Johannes Kabatek es catedrático de Lingüística Iberorrománica y de Lingüística Románica de la Universidad de Zúrich. Ha publicado numerosos estudios sobre las distintas lenguas oficiales de España, abarcando diversos ámbitos, como la sintaxis histórica, la variación, la lingüística de corpus, etc. Dirige actualmente la Revista Internacional de Lingüística Iberoamericana. Ricardo Otheguy, catedrático de Lingüística de la City University of New York, ha centrado su investigación en la lingüística aplicada y teórica, gramática funcional, español de EEUU y educación bilingüe. Ha sido director y fundador del CUNY Research Institute for the Study of Language in Urban Society, co-fundador de la revista Spanish in Context, y co-autor de uno de los libros de texto de español más utilizados en EEUU, Avancemos.

Hosted by the Harvard and Lyon Institutos Cervantes, this is the first in a series of conversations about Spanish in the US and Europe where we examine the current state of the language through a variety of lenses. On this occasion, a Hispanist from each side of the Atlantic juxtapose today's perceptions of Spanish in the United States and Europe, offering a realistic overview of the language's current status internationally, removed from the bravado and victimhood that sometimes permeate this conversation. This session touches upon sociolinguistics, the socio-cultural relevance of Spanish and its varieties in both contexts, its presence in the media, and the relation between perception and teaching.

Johannes Kabatek is a full professor of Romance and Iberian Linguistics at the University of Zurich and has published a large number of studies on the official languages of Spain, encompassing various fields including historical syntax, linguistic variation, corpus linguistics, etc. He is the current director of Revista Internacional de Lingüística Iberoamericana. Ricardo Otheguy, full professor of Linguistics at the City University of New York, has centered his research around applied and theoretical linguistics, functional grammar, Spanish in the United States, and bilingual education. He has been founder and Director of the CUNY Research Institute for the Study of Langugage in Urban Society, co-founder of the journal Spanish in Context, and co-author of one of the most widely used Spanish textbooks in the United States, Avancemos.
