This mountain lion was captured in a homeowner's footage at 1:20 a.m. Saturday, March 20, 2022, and was later seen swimming across Lake Mission Viejo, a witness and Mission Viejo animal control officials said. The big cats are known to swim, but typically only do so when absolutely necessary. However, the woman who recorded this video with her cell phone said the huge feline dove into the water unprovoked.
Mountain lions often travel great distances at night, so this one may be miles away from the lake as of Sunday. But animal control agents will be in the area for the next few days to look out for signs of the wild animal.
People who encounter a mountain lion should not run away or crouch down. Wildlife experts recommend that people raise their arms and speak loudly and firmly toward the animals while backing away slowly.
