Ticket booths + parking lot = coronavirus wedding

Ticket booths from the OC Fairgrounds, the parking lot at the Honda Center and hearing your wedding vows from a speaker through protective glass are not usually what comes to mind when you think your dream wedding.

None of that stopped Jin and Jessica from deciding now was the time to get hitched. The couple had a traditional wedding planned for November but with coronavirus closures, changing rules and the uncertainty that her wedding dress would arrive from China, Jessica said that with all that stress they decided now was the best time to get married.

With the Old Courthouse closed to the public, Orange County Clerk-Recorder Hugh Nguyen wanted to stage weddings at the OC Fairgrounds but was told the site might be used a backup hospital. He worked a deal with the Honda Center to use their parking lot for free and borrowed ticket boots from the fair.

Nguyen said he thinks he was the first in the country to open for marriages on April 20 and is still one of the few in the state that is issuing licenses and performing ceremonies. The county is averaging 132 marriages a day and expects to marry 4,000 couples by June 3.

Nguyen said his totals include weddings from 37 other states, “I’m excited to bring some joy and love during this challenging time”.

Jessica said her father has three of the underlying health conditions that make him susceptible to COVID-19, “It was just such a stress-reliever to get married now. - I had my family on Zoom and I just really, really wanted to marry my best friend”
