Underground Cities of Cappadocia in Turkey.
The dry and barren highlands of central Cappadocia served as a perfect refuge for early Christians who created their first settlements here.
The caves in the Cappadocian cones were convenient dwellings, maintaining a consistent temperature throughout the year, which protected the inhabitants from summer heat and winter cold.
Some cave settlements were quite large. For example, in Uchisar, up to 1000 people lived in a labyrinth of rooms carved into a huge exposed rock formation. The city of Derinkuyu, with an estimated population of 20,000 people, was located on 20 levels.
The underground city of Kaymakli is similar to the city of Derinkuyu, but it has smaller dimensions. So far, archaeologists have excavated only 5 levels of this multi-level shelter.
