Hekate's Supper: The Meaning in The Meal
Hekate's Supper is the contemporary tradition inspired by ancient practices of taking a meal to a crossroads after dark on the astrological New Moon, which we call the Dark Moon. These were known as Hekate's Suppers to the ancients. The word in Greek is Deipnon (which means supper). This was a very important part of the ancient religious calendar in certain areas of the Mediterranean. Unlike many deities who were honored in temples on high and so on, Hekate was propitiated at the three-way crossroads. And this reflects her primary role as she who watches over and abides at the liminal, the spaces in between crossroads thresholds and so on. Hekate for many of us, really invokes something deep within us that stirs our emotions, awakens our intuition, and so on. We discuss some of the components and the current feature of the meal that we've all been working on, which is making cheese using an ancient Roman recipe.
Hail Hekate Chthonia,
Queen of Witches,
She who stands at the threshold
Between the worlds.
I bring you a fine meal
Knowing that you intend it for the animals
And the downtrodden.
They, like me, are yours.
I feel the restless dead and the haggard spirits
Gathered in this place.
They, like me, are yours.
I am embraced by the darkest night,
For the moon has covered her face out of respect for you.
They, like me, are yours.
Here at your crossroads,
I am never alone,
Nor am I afraid.
I am surrounded by my kindred.
Those who seek your mysteries
And those whom you protect.
We are your witches,
Your horde.
Hail Hekate Chthonia,
Queen of Witches,
She who stands at the threshold
Between the worlds.
