Most common causes of low libido in men and women - Doctor Explains
Have you ever wondered what could cause a low libido? Then this video is suitable for you. Because today we are covering the most common causes of a low libido in men and women.
What is a low libido?
Loss of libido or sex drive is a common health problem that affects many women and men at some point in their life. It is important to note that everyone’s sex drive is different and there is no “normal” libido. However, if you find your lack of desire for seks distressing or if it is affecting your relationship then it is a good idea to contact your doctor.
Furthermore, I wanted to add that your libido is mostly subjective. It is up to you and your partner if you have one. This means that some people are happy with sex once a month, while others are unhappy with sex 5 times a week.
Evidence?
I found a medical study from 2017, which studied the sexual behaviour of 26,000 people. On average it seems that adults are having sex 54 times a year or approximately once a week.
Causes of a low libido:
1. It seems the older you get, the lower your sex drive becomes.
2. Another very common causes of low libido is an unhappy relationship.
3.Third on the list are physical conditions that make sex difficult or sometimes impossible. Conditions like erectile dysfunction, ejaculation problems, vaginal dryness and painful sex.
4. Next up, mental health problems can have a huge impact on a persons libido. Severe anxiety, stress or a depression may be all consuming and affect all aspects of your life.
5. We will continue this list with pregnancy and breastfeeding. Both can cause a lower libido for several reasons: changes in your body and body image, exhaustion, changes in your hormone levels and sex being painful because of injuries causes by childbirth itself.
6. Then there a many different health problems that can contribute to a lower sex drive. Most common are heart disease, diabetes, thyroid problems, cancer and just having had major surgery.
7. Plenty of medicines can also cause a lower libido. Soms high blood pressure medication, antidepressants, antipsychotics seizure medication, medication for enlarged prostates and hormonal contraception.
8. One of the last frequent causes of a low libido is drinking excessive amounts of alcohol.
9. Lastly, the same it true for most types of drugs. So, also make sure to avoid these.
