Nicoletta Papadopoulou arrived from Greece by ship in 1907, settling in Ipswich, Massachusetts, where she worked in the hosiery mills to support her mother and younger sister. On June 10, 1913, she was walking home after her shift when she stopped to observe a crowd of Greek and Polish mill workers striking for better wages. She was not a striker. She was a bystander, 27 years old, planning to announce her engagement the following day. Police opened fire on the crowd, releasing an estimated fifty to one hundred shots within five minutes. Nicoletta was struck in the head and died shortly after. An eyewitness recalled decades later: “They shot the Greek girl and killed her. She wasn’t even a striker. All they wanted was to shoot the foreigners.” No police officer was ever charged. Town officials and the local newspaper spread false narratives blaming the immigrants. Strike organizers were jailed. Families were evicted from company housing. Nicoletta was buried at the Immigrant Cemetery on Fowler’s Lane and largely forgotten for over a century. In 2022 — 109 years later — the town of Ipswich finally placed a memorial plaque at the corner where she was killed. Her great-niece was there to receive it.
