In 1895, 100 Italian families were promised land in America
In 1895, 100 Italian families were promised land in America. Instead, they were trapped on an Arkansas plantation where 125 people died of malaria in the first year alone.
The families from northern Italy had no idea how to grow cotton. The water was contaminated. Mosquitoes swarmed the swampy Delta fields. When the plantation owner died, conditions got even worse — the new owners created company currency to trap them in endless debt.
Then Father Pietro Bandini, their priest who had contracted malaria three times himself, made a bold decision: “We’re leaving.”
In 1898, he led 40 families on a daring escape to the Ozark Mountains, where he’d found 800 acres that reminded them of home. He paid the down payment with his own money. That first winter, they survived on rabbit, pasta, and polenta in abandoned farm buildings.
They named their new settlement Tontitown, after Italian explorer Henri de Tonti. They planted grape vineyards that became hugely successful. Today, Tontitown thrives as a center of Italian-American culture in Arkansas, hosting the annual Grape Festival since 1898 — a celebration that began as Father Bandini’s thanksgiving dinner for their escape from the cotton fields.
From tragedy to triumph — this is the American story they don’t teach in schools.
