Beyond Resilience: Trauma, Grief, and Love in Animals

Abundant evidence exists for the expression of grief and love, profound and intertwined emotions, by a wide variety of mammals and birds. By now, this statement should exist beyond controversy. While the seeking of more data to amplify our understanding of the extents and limits of that expression is welcome, it’s important to move beyond only a data-centered approach to embrace other questions related to action and advocacy for animals’ wellbeing. What links exist between animals’ experiences of grief and of trauma? How does the concept of resilience factor in, that is, what are the costs and benefits to privileging individual animals’ capacity for resilience after emotional suffering?
How can we use our species-specific imagination to amplify empathetic understanding of other animals’ experiences, and thus to think beyond only a state of resilience for animals who suffer? Indeed, what other goals should we embrace that recognize these animals’ agency and at the same time aim to help them heal? In short, what happens when we bring together science-based evidence and our fullest imagination to take up a multi-species lens on trauma and healing from trauma as experienced by other-than-human animals?
