Day 2 Dr Noam Rudich
Shared Spaces: Reciprocity, Vulnerability, and Healing in Human-Animal Relationship May 12-13, 2026
Day 2 | From Theory to Practice: Psychoanalytic Perspectives on Reciprocity in Human-Animal Relationships.
Noam Rudich, Tel Aviv-Yafo College; Wind Chimes Association. Dr. noam.rudich@gmail.com
Every Dog Needs a Safe Place Where They Can Be Afraid: Integrating Insights from Human and Animal Trauma Studies
Trauma is a universal mammalian experience. While Animal-Assisted Psychotherapy (AAP) traditionally views the animal as a "co-therapist" or a "tool" for human regulation, this presentation proposes a paradigm shift toward a Reciprocal Approach. This model posits that in trauma treatment, both the human survivor and the animal partner operate within a shared biological and psychological field, where the safety, agency, and recovery of one are inextricably linked to the other.
The Theoretical Framework: The presentation introduces a four-stage clinical framework:
1. Bio-Resonance: Addressing the shared physiological responses of social mammals to trauma.
2. The Interspecies Field: Drawing on Bion’s Group Theory, the therapy room is viewed as a shared unconscious matrix. Every participant—human and animal—contributes "Beta-elements" (raw traumatic fragments) to the field, requiring a collective "container" for processing.
3. Relational Intersubjectivity: Utilizing Lewis Aron’s "Relational Third" and Janina Fisher’s work on fragmented self-parts, the animal is recognized as a separate Subject. The animal’s presence bypasses human defenses, allowing for a "Relational Third" that facilitates attachment and witnessing.
4. Reciprocal Healing: Healing from objectification (the essence of trauma) occurs through the practice of non-objectification—recognizing the animal’s autonomy as a prerequisite for the patient's own repair.
Clinical Application: Using clinical vignettes, the presentation demonstrates how these theories manifest. A pivotal moment occurs when the therapy dog manifests discomfort or chooses to leave the room. Rather than a "clinical failure," this is framed as a vital exercise of Agency. By witnessing and respecting the animal’s right to self-protect, the patient internalizes a new blueprint for their own boundaries and safety.
Conclusions: The Reciprocal Approach moves from "using" animals to "relating" to them. By creating a field where "every dog has a safe place to be afraid," we foster a sanctuary where human survivors can reclaim their dignity, voice, and power. This mutual recognition constitutes the heart of traumatic repair.
