Skate Shank Sharpening With Roland Perry | GQ Shorts | Ep 0004
Rowland Perry didn’t know what to do with his mates’ old decks, so he decided to turn them into kick-ass knives instead.
If you venture into the leafy back lanes of Sydney, you’ll find many small but perfectly formed design studios that takes a different approach to the making objects of everyday use. But one of these workshops is a little different from all the others, and its called Skate Shank.
The workshop of avid fisherman and skateboarder Roland Perry, his obsession with well made things bore out of a love for upcycled wares and a growing stack of old skateboard decks growing roots in the corner of his house.
It led Perry to upcycle them himself, turning those beaten and broken boards into something more useful.
Perry’s Skate Shank outfit is no big manufacturing affair. He makes each shank by hand using a mixture of machines, sand papers and hand files, sourcing his blades from Japan, Scandinavia and the USA and his decks from his bloody-kneed friends.
For episode four of GQ Shorts, we headed to Perry’s studio to follow the process from deck to dice.
