Thursday Thinker 261: Outliers

Outliers

In this edition I'm talking about Italy. My wife and I just got back from our 25th anniversary trip to Italy and it reminded me of a book that I readm Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. In the first chapter he talks about Roseto, Italy and their life expectancy was much higher than any other towns around them. They were trying to figure out why that was. They broke down their diet, they looked at their exercise and they were very similar in diets and exercise to these other communities, yet they had a higher life expectancy. What they boiled it down to was...community.

When we were traveling throughout Italy in each of the little towns, we saw these billboards within the towns and they had the funeral announcements on them. If you live and work within that town, there's no way you could miss these announcements. I think those are important reminders in our communities that those are families, people and friends that we should reach out to, that we should touch in our community. Far too often we feel like we are connected through our devices all the time. We are connected to so many different things, but are we really connected to the right things and to the right people? We have got to move off of our devices and get face-to-face, voice to voice with some of our friends and family who maybe need us.

So hope this helps. Again, if you want to live longer...build strong communities. How do you build strong communities? It is person to person interaction. So hope this helps. Have a great Thursday.
