Thursday Thinker 190: Plateaus

Plateaus.

In this edition, we are talking about a quote that I got from a Christmas gift. It's one of these desktop calendars that have these quotes, and the very first page on January 1 is a quote from Bruce Lee. He says, "There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there. You must go beyond them." I also got a video from one of my neighbors, Mike, and it is from Kara Lawson, the Duke women's basketball coach, and she talks about this very same thing. Her line was that success is not linear.

Especially as you're starting the new year, you may have some resolutions, you've set some goals for your business, and we expect to go from point A to point B. It does not happen that way. A lot of times what happens is you grow and you hit this plateau. Sometimes you will, even as you hit this plateau, go down a bit and that is the hard frustrating part. As long as you are urgent and consistent, you'll come out of that and grow more. But guess what happens next...you're going to plateau again, and then you're going to potentially go down, but then you're going to go back up.

You must be consistent and you must show some urgency when there are opportunities around. You must take advantage of those opportunities, and sometimes it's a timing thing. Throughout the year, don't be discouraged if you hit that plateau. Understand that it is a part of your growth and you need to work hard and sometimes smarter to get out of that plateau and to hit that next level. I hope you have a great beginning to 2024.
