Алхимия и истоки современной науки
На первый взгляд дискуссии вокруг трансгуманизма, биоинженерии, искусственного продолжения рода представляются ультрасовременными. Однако книга Ньюмана демонстрирует, что у этих дискуссий очень глубокие корни, проявляющиеся в контексте спора о соотношении природы и искусства, который начался еще в период классической древности. В рамках этого спора, защитники алхимии формулировали тезис о способности искусства если не превосходить природу, то уж по крайней мере доводить ее до совершенства, до которого она не доходит спонтанным образом. И эта позиция действительно сильно напоминает позицию современных сторонников генной инженерии и эктогенеза.
