Is there enough phosphorus in your soil? | DIY garden projects | Gardening Australia
A lot of soil in Australia is deficient in phosphorus. Jerry's got some tips to add and recycle phosphorus to your garden. Subscribe: http://ab.co/GardeningYouTube
For a healthy, productive garden like Jerry's, there are certain things you must have to keep it thriving.
When Jerry moved to his Brisbane property in 2005, he had his soil tested, and what he found was typical of many Australian soils – heavily weathered, and chronically deficient in phosphorus. Phosphorus is a vital component of healthy plant growth, and cannot be rectified by simply adding composts too soils and garden beds. Before Jerry planted anything on his block, he added super-phosphate to his entire planting area, at a rate of two handfuls per square metre.
This bought the levels of phosphorus in his soil up to a baseline, meaning he was then able to maintain this level through the cycling of phosphorus in his garden – adding manures and composts to maintain an optimum level. He also adds organic phosphate when required, which is a natural product based on guano, the accumulated excrement from either seabirds or bats.
Phosphorus is vital to all lifeforms on earth, and plants need it for both cellular development and structure and strong root growth. Blood And bone and pelletised chicken manure contain high levels of phosphorus, and can be added to soils, plants and compost heaps regularly.
