Amy Van Dyken-Rouen a 6-time Olympic Gold Medal Winner continues to Inspire

1996, I get chills thinking about it, the good kind. Atlanta, was a place I called home. My Daughter Alyssa was born there. And for one moment in time, a place the world would gather to compete in the Olympic Games. And even though I was there…to soak in all the atmosphere, cheer for our. Team, the USA…we watched most of the action on tv. And there were few highlights that captured the nation quite like Amy Van Dyken’s. She won 4 Olympic Gold Medals in Atlanta. And we shined. Everyone shined. But little did we know what kind of struggles she faced to get there. Early on in her swimming career she face adversity whether it was convincing the swimming world she was serious, that she had the talent and the mindset to be champion or her own health issues namely asthma which can run rampant from every conceivable condition and oh yeah from exercise itself. She was even allergic to chlorine. “Don’t let others define you” Van Dyken-Rouen told a Casper audience at a Boys and Girls Club of Central Wyoming Breakfast. It was a theme she would highlight several times that morning as a world class Athlete telling her story. Inspirational, funny, ironic, talented, driven, the stuff Champions are made off. In June of 2014 her life changed with an accident she had in all-terrain vehicle that severed her spinal chord. An accident that would partially paralyze her…but not her spirit. Her dramatic struggles and her zest for life are breathtaking. Her inspiration leaves you in awe of her accomplishments and her ability to get others to believe in themselves is incredible.
