Exploring Barakoma Airfield on Vella Lavella (2017)
Exploring the Barakoma fighter strip on Vella Lavella island in the Solomon Islands. Barakoma was the home base of Major Gregory "Pappy" Boyington's VMF-214, the Black Sheep.
Filmed by me on June 3, 2017 as part of a Valor Tours group let by Prof. Anderson Giles aboard the dive boat MV Bilikiki.
The footage includes:
Sailing to Vella Lavella from our ship
Walking around Barakoma Airfield. Now unused, the coral runway is still visible.
Walking into the jungle to look for the remains of the revetments, wreckage, or relics (we didn't find anything).
