Amonate, Virginia/West Virginia: Appalachian Coal Town - Once Part of the Famed Pocahontas Fuel Co.

Amonate, Virginia/West Virginia: Appalachian Coal Town - Once Part of the Famed Pocahontas Fuel Co. The town was built in the early 1920s and was a model coal town with some of the nicer houses and amenities available at the time. Even today, Amonate still has a good sized population for a coal camp that is as isolated as it is, a testimony to the quality of homes which also gave folks living there a pride of ownership to take care of them. It is partly in Virginia (Tazewell County) and partly in West Virginia (McDowell County). The mine was active for several decades and was once one of the top Appalachian coal mines.
