Logan, West Virginia: Once Was a Coal Boom Town Built by the Black Diamond, Now Trying to Survive

Logan, West Virginia: Once Was a Coal Boom Town Built by the Black Diamond, Now Trying to Survive. Like virtually all of coal country in Appalachia, Logan has been hit hard by the decline in the fortunes of the coal industry. Formerly home to over 5,000+ people (including former heavyweight boxing champ, Jack Dempsey), Logan has seen its population drop to around 1,500. The inevitable challenges that brings has been a common theme in this part of the United States. A lot of great people remain in the city to try to stop the bleeding and rebound.
