Paul Shaffer's "Yeah!" Collection Plus More on Letterman 1982, 1985

Requested: The Paul Shaffer "Yeah!" collection. I decided to expand the compilation by including the segments preceding and following Paul's creation, first Dave's opening remarks and then his desk chat, because stuff happened.

A lot longer than planned, but this covers a period of Dave's Late Night now rarely seen.

1982:
1. May 5. Paul wants to be known now as Paul "Yeah" Shaffer.
2. May 6. Dave introduces his bandleader as Paul "Yeah" Shaffer.

1985:
3. February 28. For the first time on the show, and taking Dave by surprise, Paul introduces himself in song, vamping on a spontaneous riff. Dave then plugs Paul's profile in "Interview" magazine and complains about the cost of last night's helicopter. It's the last show before the 1985 Writers' Strike, which lasts for 2 1/2 weeks.

4. March 21. Paul's in "a Phil Harris kind of mood," and details on Dave's phone complaints are censored. Also, Martin Scorcese's bedroom slippers are missing, and Dave trolls the CBS Late Movie.

5. March 28. Paul alters the lyrics to "This Could Be the Start of Something Big." He is soon off for Atlanta at an AOR station whose call letters he can't recall.

6. April 3. Dave struggles through a joke, and Paul introduces a "Beat composition thing I'm trying out"; the "Yeah!" meme is born. More CBS Late Movie trolling.

7. April 4. Opening Remarks distractions and the circus is in town. Paul reprises his new Beat song, and Dave hints at a recent comic's complaint.

8. April 10. Dave on the circus unicorn, Paul introduces his "Ode to Spring," and Dave on deadbeat guests.

9. April 11. Circus unicorn merchandise ideas, deadbeat guests followup, and Dave requests Paul's new tune.

10. April 16. Dave tries to recover from Joke #2 and then gets on Paul's new haircut. Paul "philosophizes" his new tune. Then more on Paul's haircut. Dave announces Late Night is going to California, and the gift offers and invites begin. Also, the Woolworth building comes down.
Later in the show, Dave asks seven-year-old playwright Austen Dupre what she thinks of Paul's new haircut (referred two days later on April 18).

11. April 17. Gifts from the audience. For the first time Paul's song is reduced to one "Yeah!" Dave on the upcoming week in California and more gift offers/invites.

12. April 18. Paul once again goes with a single "Yeah!" More CBS Late Movie trolling. More California gift offers/invites, and Paul's new haircut repercussions.

13. April 22. The one-note "Yeah" takes root, and more California gift offers/invites.

14. April 23. Paul explains his "overture" and then discusses a new college drinking game. Still more California gift offers/invites.

15. May 9 (taped May 2). More interaction with the audience. Dave wants to "hear one." Last show before California and final gift offers/invites.

16. May 20. Back from California, Paul picks up where he left off, a conversation on The Apollo Theater tv special, Dave's gardener, and Sammy Davis, Jr. Dave then promotes Steve Jordan's profile in "Modern Drummer," and a campaign against Phil Collins new hit, "Sussudio," begins.

17. May 21. Dave and audience member Mack. The fog comes in too early, and Paul turns from "Yeah!" to "Sussudio."

18. May 22. More "Sussudio" chat.

19. May 23. Paul's product placement. He then merges "Yeah!" with "Sussudio."

20. July 11 (taped June 6). After two weeks, "Yeah!" comes to a close as Paul gives one final performance and then displays the song's sheet music. Dave talks about staff member Heloise. Also, Viewer Mail, with Jeff Martin, Darcy Hettrich, and Al Frisch, all with special background scenery. In the next act, Dave invites Heloise to home base while waiting for guest Grace Jones to show up.

Bonus clips: Closing the "Sussudio" loop:
21. May 29. On Phil Collins, "Sussudio," the Suit of Suet, and an audience member with a t-shirt.

22. May 30. Update on Phil Collins appearing on the show, and Dave starts introducing everyone, with the firm voice responses of Barbara Gaines and Jude Brennan from backstage. And back to the CBS Late Movie.

23. June 17. Phil is scheduled for June 24. Trouble with the band, and Jann Wenner.

24. June 24. Cold Open with Dave, Phil Collins, and Larry "Bud" Melman.

Finally, a closing image of the "Yeah!" sheet music as published on p. vi of _Late Night with David Letterman: The Book,_ released in November 1985.
