In this video I expose what I believe is a major cause of single strand knots in natural hair (especially 4a, 4b and 4c). I then go on to make simple and easy-to-implement suggestions for minimising the number of single strand knots you get. Remember, fewer knots = less breakage = more length retention! Another tip I didn't mention is to wear a satin scarf to bed (I imagine you already do that, but this is a gentle reminder in case you're yet to start).

TRANSCRIPT
You're a dedicated natural: you wear protective styles, moisturise regularly and even deep condition AND pre-poo your tresses. So why on earth are you being punished with single strand knots!?

In my experience, single strand knots appear when your LOOSE hair is allowed to coil. In general, this happens to 4c hair when you engage in practices often encouraged in the natural hair community. I'm going to tell you what I believe are common causes of this problem and provide a few solutions. Please note that this video is targeted towards people who actually have a problem with single strand knots. I acknowledge that some naturals have grown to accept them as part of the experience.

The root cause is wetting/dampening/moisturising loose hair. Let's have a look at various scenarios.

Scenario 1: You wet your hair to style it. Let's say you've decided to wear a bun. Many are now in the habit of moisturising their ends before protective styling. A problem arises when you add your liquid, oil and cream but don't stretch your ends before tucking them into the bun. This is the perfect opportunity for your ends to hug each other and give each other love. The result is often single and double strand-knots.

Try this instead: Plait/twist your ends, even if you're going to put them in a bun

Scenario 2: You wash your hair loose. Wet strands of Afro hair can't wait to wrap themselves round other strands of Afro hair.

Solution: Save yourself a head(and arm)ache by sectioning and plaiting your hair before you wash it.

Scenario 3: your let you hair get very dry/stripped when you wash it. Dry strands of hair won't glide past each other as easily as moisturised strands will.

Solution: pre-poo your hair with coconut/olive oil and a conditioner of choice AND consider changing to a gentler cleanser. You could also try oil rinsing after you deep-condition. In brief, this entails piling on your oil of choice before rinsing it out.

Scenario 4: you wash and go. For the reasons stated earlier, leaving your hair wet and loose could cause knots.

Solution: Consider stretching your hair in plaits or twists immediately after you shingle, and letting them dry before loosening. Alternatively, why not switch to braid-outs/twist-outs if wash n go's aren't working for you?

So folks. These were my 4 measures to prevent single strand knots. Have you tried any of these? Were there any that I should have included? Did any surprise you? Let's start a conversation in the comment section below. Please pass on this video with anyone you think may be struggling with single strand knots.
