Conchas Pan de Dulce - Mexican Sweet Bread

Conchas (shells) is a traditional Mexican pastry that is famous for its shape of a shell. Conchas consists of two parts, a soft, bready bottom layer, and the sugar shell pattern on the top. This is one of the most popular pastries found in Mexican Panaderias (Bakeries) in Mexico. Depending on where you are from, they can also be found in grocery stores throughout the United States.

Ingredients:
To activate the yeast mix the following ingredients:
2 Tbsp Flour
1 Tbsp Sugar
2 1/2 Tsp Active Yeast
1/2 Cup Warm Milk

3 1/2 Cups of All-Purpose Flour
1 Tsp Cinnamon
1 Tsp Ground Anise
1/2 Tsp Salt
1/2 Cup Sugar
3 Large Eggs
1 Tsp Vanilla
1/2 Cup Softened/Melted Butter

Vegetable Shortening for the bowl and the cookie sheets

Topping
1 Cup All-Purpose Flour
1 Cup Confectioner Sugar
3/4 Cup Vegetable Shortening
1 Tsp Vanilla
Food Coloring
1 Tbsp Cocoa Powder for the Chocolate topping
