Looking at feeding birds in urban gardens ... we visited someone who has a special bond with the birds around her, and she shared the secrets of how she does it. *The opinions expressed in this show on nectar recipes do not reflect the view of Bird Matters. Bird Matters feels that it’s always better to feed nectar-feeding birds by planting locally indigenous, tube-flowering plants in your garden. And if you do provide artificial nectar, keep it simple with a 10-20% straight sugar solution (never xylitol!) as close to their natural diet as possible. These birds do need protein, especially when breeding and moulting, but can generally get plenty from insects in their environment.
