Zululand Bird Route Bird Guide: Birdlife South Africa / Bird Matters Profiles
Meet Sakhamuzi Mhlongo of Birdlife South Africa. From the village of Nyoni he became a bird guide with Birdlife South Africa and then moved onto looking after the new guides assisting them with getting up and running. He also works on the marketing side of the Zulu land birding route. Following on from his own inspiration that brought him into birding, he focus' on environmental education to offer that same gift to the next generation.
He has a love for meeting birders from around the world and sharing stories. He spreads knowledge through educational programs to local communities about the importance of looking after our birds in the unprotected areas, bringing awareness to the tourism the birds bring.... after all there are thousands of birds that come to look at the Green Barbet, the Swamp Nightjar and the Spotted Ground Thrush, those are just small birds that attract people from miles away.
His favourite bird is the the Green Barbet, which mainly only occurs in two places in the world - in the Ongoyo Forest, South Africa and Tanzania.
This interview took place at Flock in Kruger 2016, the Birdlife South Africa AGM, which ran alongside the Learn About Birds Program, a combine Percy Fitzpatrick Institute of African Ornithology initiative.
