Raccoons are instantly recognizable by their distinctive black "bandit mask" across their eyes, thought to help reduce glare and enhance their night vision. Raccoons are widespread across North America, found throughout southern Canada, most of the United States, and into parts of northern South America. Raccoons are generally most active at night, using their excellent night vision and keen sense of smell to forage for food under the cover of darkness. Unlike cats, raccoons can rotate their hind feet 180 degrees, allowing them to descend trees head-first with ease – a unique climbing skill!
