The key to identifying a Rio Grande Wild Turkey is the distinct buff or tan-colored band at the tip of its tail feathers and on the lower back/rump, contrasting with the chestnut brown bands. Their bare, featherless heads and necks can change colors rapidly from red, white to blue depending on their excitement, mood or health. Wild turkeys have incredibly sharp eyesight (with a nearly 270-degree field of vision) and acute hearing, making them extremely wary and difficult to approach. Despite their size, wild turkeys fly surprisingly well for short distances and roost high in trees at night to escape ground predators.
