Feral hog snare activity

A snare set on a trail leading to a papaya farm wasn't as effective as expected. An automatic video camera was able to capture footage of how the feral pigs interacted with the snare, and the footage provides a great deal of insight into how a the installation could be improved.

Pigs could smell the trigger and avoided it. Rocks placed to force them to step onto the trigger pedal (which was hidden beneath a thin layer of soil) were still a bit too far away, and they were able step around or over it.

The snare was in place for two weeks before a pig was caught. The camera recorded other pigs that avoided the snare. That footage can be seen here: https://youtu.be/cSUHRDb3w1w

The one that was eventually snared was around 25 pounds. The much bigger sow avoided capture.
