A religious fortress: the Cathedral of Agrigento, Sicily

The Cathedral of Agrigento is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and to St. Gerlando, the Patron Saint of Agrigento (Sicily) who founded it at the very end of the 11th century.
Every century, since then, it has been renovated and today it's a result of a mixture of art styles. For so many years it has been standing on top of the Colle di Girgenti (Girgenti Hill) and guarding, as a stronghold, one of the oldest borders of Christianity. Sicilian-Norman and Chiaramontan styles are shown by its architecture, Aragonese and later Baroque influence have affected its decorations; Neoclassical and modern solutions were applied, too. Only an expert eye can help to detected differences, as the different styles mix together in harmony. The Cathedral museum holds the precious Roman marble sarcophagus of Hippolytus and Phaedra which is mentioned by the Grand Tour travellers from the 18th and 19th .
