A NEW JERUSALEM IN SICILY - PALMA DI MONTECHIARO: THE LEOPARD'S PLACE

Palma di Montechiaro is about 20 minutes by car from Agrigento and it's located inland not far from a medieval Chiaramonte castle overlooking the sea.
Today it's a town of a thousand contradictions, but it retains a fairly well preserved historic center which in 2019 was the setting for an event by the Dolce & Gabbana designers.

It was founded in a fertile and healthy place in the first half of the 17th century by the brothers Carlo and Giulio Tomasi and Caro, originally from Ragusa.
It was the time of the Counter Reformation and the prevailing architectural style of its monuments is therefore Baroque.
The town planner was the Jesuit Giovan Battista Hodierna who is buried in the Mother Church.
The Tomasi family was very religious and wealthy and conceived the new city as a New Jerusalem. They managed to obtain a copy of the Holy Shroud and to make Palma an important pilgrimage destination.

It is the literary place of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa who wrote "The Leopard", of Leonardo Sciascia and of Andrea Camilleri.

Even today the Monastery of SS. Rosario is inhabited by a small community of cloistered Benedictine nuns famous for the production of almond and cucuzzata sweets.
Among other things, the monastery houses the Letter by the Devil and the body of the Venerable Sister Maria Crocifissa della Concezione.

Not far from the monastery and near the Mother Church the Palazzo del Duca still preserves its original and precious wooden ceilings.

Palma di Montechiaro dista circa 20 minuti in auto da Agrigento e sorge nell’entroterra poco lontana da un castello medievale chiaramontano costruito a picco sul mare.
Oggi è un paese dalle mille contraddizioni, ma conserva un centro storico abbastanza ben conservato che nel 2019 è stato scenario di un evento degli stilisti Dolce & Gabbana.

Fu fondata in luogo fertile e salubre nella prima metà del XVII sec. dai fratelli Carlo e Giulio Tomasi e Caro, originari di Ragusa. Era l’epoca della Controriforma e lo stile architettonico prevalente dei suoi monumenti è pertanto quello barocco. L’urbanista fu il gesuita Giovan Battista Hodierna la cui tomba si trova all’interno della sua Chiesa Madre.

La famiglia Tomasi era molto religiosa e influente e concepì la nuova città come una Nuova Gerusalemme. Riuscì ad ottenere una copia della Sacra Sindone e a fare di Palma una importante meta di pellegrinaggio dove espiare i propri peccati.

E’ luogo letterario di Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, autore de "Il Gattopardo", di Leonardo Sciascia e di Andrea Camilleri.

Ancora oggi il Monastero del SS. Rosario è abitato da una piccola comunità di suore benedettine di clausura famose per la produzione di dolcetti a base di mandorla e cucuzzata.
Tra l’altro il monastero custodisce la Lettera del Diavolo e il corpo della Venerabile Suor Maria Crocifissa della Concezione.

Poco lontano dal monastero e nei pressi della Chiesa Madre, sorge il Palazzo del Duca che conserva degli originali e pregiati soffitti lignei.
