The Hadrian steam special, promoted by the Rail Touring Company, visited the north of England earlier today.

It was hauled by that most iconic of British steam locomotives, LNER Class A3 Pacific number 60103 "Flying Scotsman".

Train 1Z64 originated at Derby and travelled via Doncaster and Leeds to Hellifield where it changed over to steam traction. It then headed north up the Settle and Carlisle Line, arriving at Carlisle a few minutes late at 2 pm.

My footage shows Flying Scotsman lead the train into Carlisle. West Coast Railways' locomotive 47237 was bringing up the rear. After pausing for fifteen minutes to drop off passengers, the train rumbled off into the distance as the crew started to ready it for the return journey via the Tyne Valley Line.

The platforms were very busy at Carlisle today, as there was also a second steam special, The Northern Belle, being hauled by 60163 Tornado, passing through earlier in the day. You can see my footage of that in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_yBI-oLL5o

I relocated to Hexham where The Hadrian, now running as train 1Z66, was due to pass just after 5 pm. Things didn't quite go to plan, with the steam loco failing and trespassers on the line causing further delays.

By the time it arrived at Hexham it was almost an hour late and the platforms were heaving - so much so, that my shot is much shorter and more cramped than I had intended. The train was also crawling along at reduced speed, having no doubt been warned about the crowds in waiting.

As if the Gods weren't conspiring enough, a Sprinter was occupying platform 2 making it impossible to view the approach of The Hadrian. When it did eventually pass we found that 47237 was leading. It transpired that an AWS fault had rendered Flying Scotsman out of service.

I apologise about the various bodily appendages that crept into the corner of my shots. Some people were totally oblivious (and others inconsiderate) to the fact I was stood there filming. I also apologise for the mark on my lens, which I never noticed until I was reviewing the footage back at home.
