Handloading a Bongo Female and Her Calf

Got called to transfer this female bongo and her calf. We caught her and her calf in a trap initially. We did this to ensure that we would be able to find her and her calf when we needed to. The pair was on open range and we didn’t want to risk losing them after darting one or the other. Initially I darted the mother. When I confirmed she was showing signs of sedation, I darted the calf. Though the calf was doing well after getting sedated, he laid down about 2 minutes faster than I wanted him to. I wanted to ensure the calf’s safety so I approached the mother about 2 minutes faster than I wanted to. I opened the drop gate of the trap to enter the trap with the mom. Though she was sedated, she saw the opening and took it. I wasn’t concerned about it because I knew she would come back to me. Bongo like to follow sound and movement when they are sedated. I followed her out of the trap and called her back. Watch as I make noise and move to get her to come to me. I’m not saying anything special or important, but I try not to sound like too big of a fool when I’m calling them. After I got my hands on her, we walked her on the trailer then loaded the baby. Even though it didn’t go exactly how I planned, it worked out. #thewildlifevet #drsamwilkinson #veterinarian #exoticwildlifevet #bongo
