NPRDP Orchestra Tribute to Boogalú (NPRDP 2022)

This performance from the NPRDP Orchestra features a boogalú – a genre of Latin music created in New York City that melds musical styles from soul to mambo, and fuses languages to create a sound unlike any other. Several prominent Puerto Rican musicians brought boogalú music into the mainstream in the 1960’s including Joe Cuba, considered the “father of Latin boogalú,” and Pete Rodríguez, who’s “I Like It Like That” has been a beloved boogalú for generations. This song, composed and arranged by Papo Vasquez, “El Alcalde del Barrio - The Mayor of Spanish Harlem,” features a mix of Latin music and R&B with lyrics in English and Spanish. It is a tribute to Joe Cuba and to the Puerto Ricans, Latinos, and Black communities who, like this musical genre, continue to endure and thrive. (NPRDP 2022)
