¡Guazabara! A Tribute to the Taíno People (NPRDP 2023)

The 2023 National Puerto Rican Day Parade paid tribute to the Indigenous peoples of Puerto Rico, including the native Taínos - one of the three cultural pillars that make up Puerto Rican heritage and identity, along with European and African heritages. While these vibrant Taíno people were decimated centuries ago with the arrival of the Europeans, they left behind a legacy that lives on: our food, our customs and even Spanish and English words still in use today. This video is an animated feature that highlighted the life and customs of the Taínos of Puerto Rico, a place known to them as Borikén. The story is an adaptation created especially for this year’s Parade, and it’s based on a children’s book by 2023 Lifetime Achievement Honoree, Tere Marichal. (NPRDP 2023)
