Germline editing moratorium faces its first open challenge #CRISPR

The 2019 international moratorium on editing human embryos faces a direct public test. Cathy Tie, a 30-year-old Canadian biotech entrepreneur and ex-wife of He Jiankui, announced a New York venture to genetically modify human embryos, framing transparency and regulatory engagement as the path to legitimacy.

The timing sharpens the stakes. Somatic CRISPR, which edits cells in already-born patients, is reaching standard-of-care positioning across oncology, cardiovascular disease, and rare conditions. ASCO 2026 just delivered Phase 3 readouts in seven previously closed cancer categories. The medical justification for heritable modification is compressing precisely as the capability to attempt it goes public. Whether governance frameworks can form ahead of private capital building the first clinic will define this arc over the coming year.
