Lieutenant Aleksandr Prokhorenko was a Russian special forces officer serving during the Syrian Civil War. In March 2016, while on a secret mission near Palmyra to guide airstrikes, he became surrounded by ISIS fighters. With no way out and realizing capture was imminent, he made a heroic decision.

Rather than fall into enemy hands, Prokhorenko radioed in his own coordinates and called for an airstrike on his position. His final reported words were, “Fire on my position. For my homeland.”
