Edward Sexby || Path Of Light

Colonel Edward Sexby (1616 – 13 January 1658) was an English Puritan soldier and Leveller in the army of Oliver Cromwell. Later he turned against Cromwell and plotted his assassination. Played by John Simm in the 2008 miniseries.

It should be noted that the character in the miniseries is only based on the real Edward Sexby as several changes were made to his biography:

1. He didn't resign his commission because of losing a hand or because of growing dislike for Cromwell. He was actually tried by court-martial for detaining the pay of his soldiers, and lost his commission as a result.
2. He actually continued working for Cromwell after losing his commission and was sent on a mission to France to report on its political condition.
3. Sexby didn't turn on Cromwell because of the supposed assassination of Thomas Rainsborough. Sexby was eager for an Anglo-Spanish league against France but when Cromwell abandoned the projects this angered Sexby. As a result he joined a group of royalists and Levellers.
4. Sexby wasn't exiled but actually fled to Flanders to avoid capture. From there he negotiated with Spain to gain a small army to spark insurrection in England against Cromwell.
5. Cromwell had actually been well informed of Sexby's alliance with Spain and the oncoming rebellion and mentioned this in one of his speeches.
6. Sexby didn't personally try to assassinate Cromwell but did send agents, however, they all missed their opportunities and some arrested and executed. Had the assassination been successful, Sexby would have launched the uprising against the government.
7. After the failed assassination, Sexby did not commit suicide but actually published a pamphlet called "Killing No Murder" that advocated for the killing of Cromwell. He arrived in England in disguise to carry out actions he proposed in the pamphlet. However, as he was leaving for Flanders, he was recognised and captured.
8. He was sent to the Tower where his wife is recorded as having visited him. While imprisoned, he began to lose his mind and died on 13th January 1568. His body was buried in the cemetery near the Tower chapel two days later.
