King Constans || The Way

According to legend, King Constans II was the first Christian king of England, ruling from 407 - 409 AD. He was executed in 411 AD.

His father, Constantine III, was a Roman general who declared himself Western Roman Emperor in Britannia in 407 and established himself in Gaul. Constantine rose to power during a bloody struggle in Roman Britain and was acclaimed emperor by the local legions in 407. He promptly moved to Gaul, taking all of the mobile troops from Britain, to confront the various Germanic invaders who had crossed the Rhine the previous winter. Constantine gained the upper hand after several battles with the forces of the Western Roman Emperor Honorius. As a result, Honorius recognised Constantine as co-emperor in 409. The activities of the invading tribes, raids by Saxons on the near-defenceless Britain and desertions by some of his top commanders led to a collapse of support. These deserting top commanders murdered Constans during revolts in Vienne. After further military setbacks he abdicated in 411. He was captured and executed shortly afterwards.

Trivia:

- According to legend, Constans was Constantine's eldest son. His other sons were Julianus, Ambrosius Aurelianus and Uther Pendragon.

- Constans II (played by John Gielgud [RIP] ) and Vortigern (played by Rutger Hauer [RIP] ) both appear in the 1998 'Merlin' miniseries, although it isn't very historically accurate. Constans and Vortigern are shown to be old men even though they were both quite young during the rebellion. [SPOILERS] Constans is beheaded by Vortigern during a siege in England rather than Vienne at the start of the series. This is Constans' only on-screen appearance in all movies and TV shows. This version of events is what is described by Geoffrey of Monmouth in '‎Historia Regum Britanniae' (1136 AD). Constantine is neither seen or mentioned as Constans is referred to as Uther's father rather than his older brother.
