Walking the London tube: Waterloo to Embankment

The short walk from Waterloo to Embankment stations on the London Underground's Northern and Bakerloo lines traverses a changing landscape.

The South Bank - from lead shot to London Eye

In the beginning of the 1800s, most of the area - even this close to the centre of modern London - was rural. Indeed, if the London is measured from Charing Cross, the nearest field was less than half a mile away at the beginning of the nineteenth century.

The foreshore of the modern South Bank was industrial until Second World War bombing caused a rethink. An area so accessible to the West End could be repurposed as an area of culture - so the 1951 Festival of Britain was laid out.

Once that had run its course, the South Bank came into its own with the Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Jubilee Gardens and recently the London Eye.
