ALLERGY TESTING: Doctor explains the Skin Patch Test

In this video Doctor O'Donovan explains key things you need to know about a skin patch test - a test used to check for allergies.

What are patch tests?

Patch testing is undertaken for the investigation and confirmation of substances that produce allergic contact dermatitis. It involves applying appropriately diluted allergens to the skin, usually on the back for convenience, for 48 hours. The patch tests are then read at 96 hours as reactions usually take 48–96 hours to develop. Positive reactions produce a patch of dermatitis at the application site of the offending allergen, which will appear as a red and possibly raised, vesicular and even blistering area.

How many appointments will I have for a patch test?

You will typically have three appointments (but this can vary from clinic to clinic).

Can you go to work after a patch test?

Generally yes, but you should avoid excessive bending and twisting, as the patches may come off. It is also a good idea to avoid strenuous exercise. Be extra careful for the first two to three hours after your patches are applied. This is when the patches are more likely to come off.
