South Korea Arrests Tomb-Sweeping Suspect in Country’s Worst Wildfire Disaster

South Korean police have arrested a man suspected of causing the country’s most devastating wildfire in history, which has claimed at least 26 lives and scorched vast areas across the southern regions.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the 56-year-old suspect was taken into custody on charges of starting the fire around noon on March 22 while performing a tomb-sweeping ritual for his ancestors on a hill in Uiseong County, North Gyeongsang Province.

Massive Destruction and Rising Casualties
Fueled by strong winds and dry weather, the fire quickly spread to surrounding areas, resulting in at least 26 fatalities in North Gyeongsang. The blaze also destroyed approximately 4,000 homes and buildings, including the UNESCO-listed Goun Temple, a site of significant cultural heritage.

Despite his arrest, the suspect has denied the allegations. "We are currently reviewing the evidence," a North Gyeongsang police official told Reuters.

Ongoing Battle Against the Blaze
The Korea Forest Service announced that the wildfire in North Gyeongsang was brought under control on March 28, but strong winds reignited the flames the following day. So far, an estimated 48,000 hectares of forest have been burned, displacing tens of thousands of residents in the worst wildfire disaster in South Korea’s history.
