Outdoor VLOG 61: First Official XC Ski Day of 2023-24 (and the Year-Long Streak Continues!)
* It's windy during the few times I talk during this vlog, so make use of the closed captions (that I painstakingly edit and upload!).
Today is my first official cross-country ski day of the 2023-24 winter. This session also doubles as my October xc ski day. So I'm on still on track to make my year-long goal of xc skiing at least once each month during 2023.
Admittedly, this won't be the finest day of xc skiing that I log this season. But it's a day on skis, nonetheless. And there's always something, regardless of conditions, that we can be working on.
Today was all about maintaining an athletic stance on the downhills and pressuring the grip zones on the uphill sections. I wasn't able to perform too much diagonal striding due to the less-than-ideal snow conditions. However, I still worked on the push-off and weight transfer phase of striding. Also, because the conditions were so rough, I had to be quick on my feet to avoid obstacles.
The problem with thin coverage, like today's, is that every pass over the snow reveals more natural debris. So there's a finite number of times you can use your "tracks" before they become too hazardous. That said, I did actually log a whopping 1.25 miles on skis today :)
The backcountry xc skis that I used in this video were the Fischer Spider 62mm with NNN BC Auto bindings. I was wearing Fischer OTX Adventure boots.
