Visit A Professional Photo Printing Lab & Find Out All About It
Paul Williams of PW Digital (http://www.paulwilliamsdigital-poole.co.uk) agreed to show us round a professional photo printing lab and explain the differences between sending your image files away to be printed and home printing.
I have always had my images printed professionally because though home printing is kinda fun -- it's also a lot of work. Not only does your monitor have to be correctly calibrated, you have to calibrate your printer to match it for each type of paper you use or the images won't look the way you want them to. So let's say you use pearl luster and gloss finishes that's three extra lots of calibration.
There's a cost implication too because by the time you've bought top quality archival inks and papers, maybe had to re-print a couple of times it's more expensive to print at home than to let a professional do it.
Now I totally get the excitement of watching your image inch its way out of the printer. It's like watching the image appear in a tray of chemicals back in the old days. But personally I have plenty of other things I need to be doing so I send them away to be printed.
I'm not suggesting that's the best way to do it. But I thought it might be interesting to visit a pro lab and let Paul show us round and explain the process.
If you're looking for a good lab in the UK I highly recommend PW Digital. I've been sending them my image files for years.
